I was taught to believe that I was left to wrestle out the conflict between my sinful nature and my new life in the Spirit as long as I’m on this side of Heaven. But there are so many scriptures that have jumped off the pages of my Bible and smacked me in the face over the years, and they say otherwise.
Here are just a few:
“For we know that our old self was crucified with Him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin—because anyone who has died has been set free from sin.” —Romans 6:6-7 (NIV)
You are set free from sin.
“May God give you more and more grace and peace as you grow in your knowledge of God and Jesus our Lord. By His divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know Him, the one who called us to Himself by means of His marvelous glory and excellence. And because of His glory and excellence, He has given us great and precious promises. These are the promises that enable you to share his divine nature and escape the world’s corruption caused by human desires.” —2 Peter 1:2-4 (NLT)
You are filled with His divine power; all you need to live a godly life.
“Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit.” —Romans 8:5 (NLT)
Which dominates you?
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” —2 Corinthians 5:17 (NIV)
The old is GONE—walk in your new!
“Therefore, dear brothers and sisters, you have no obligation to do what your sinful nature urges you to do. For if you live by its dictates, you will die. But if through the power of the Spirit you put to death the deeds of your sinful nature, you will live.” —Romans 8:12-12
It’s interesting when you are taught to believe this will be your battle, the battle remains. But when the Holy Spirit gives you revelation of what these passages are saying, you realize you don’t have to be in conflict between your old self because it’s dead, and as long as your mind is governed by the Spirit you will crave the things of the Spirit, the internal conflict loses power.
This is the new life in the Spirit that Jesus paid for. Walk in His strength and power!
