Time Management—God’s Way

If you don’t have time to do the things you need or desire to because other obligations take up too much time, then perhaps you have said yes to things you weren’t supposed to.

“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.” Matthew 11:28-30 (MSG)

Let’s get practical: God has given us 24 hours to manage. I’ve learned that within those 24 hours, I actually have plenty time to take care of my God-given responsibilities and even some fun activities that I love to do.

You know, like painting a mirror or rearranging my living room. True story. This includes getting good rest, sitting with Jesus, and exercising daily!

This is coming from a mom of 5 (even while they were all under my roof), with a husband that travels, and now entering into a new season of schooling them at home.

24 hours is still enough time.

As I’ve learned to pray and ask God as situations arise, when to say yes, and when to say no, I hear “no, that’s not yours” more often than one would think. I used to feel really bad and cave (say yes anyway) because I didn’t want to let people down. I soon realized that my need for approval from others over God’s approval was “the why” to my ongoing stress and anxiety. I was not experiencing the peace and joy that the Bible says I have through Him. My days felt heavy; I was exhausted!

God’s grace is enough. This doesn’t mean that we will have the grace for everything we’ve piled on our life plates. We are not promised that. God’s unforced grace is for what He’s designed and purposed us to manage and care for in each season of our lives.

If you are feeling heavy, stressed, anxious, or overwhelmed, chances are you are not within the parameters of what God intended for you to say yes to. His “unforced rhythms of grace” is not available in the pressures life throws at you that are not yours to carry. In my upcoming book, Ripple Effect, we go deeper with this concept.

God desires for us to know what it feels like to live light and free.

Check in with Him. Hear what He has for you in each season. Wait for His reply before you respond to life pressures and obligations. If you do, you will find that not only is 24 hours in a day enough, it’s plenty of time to take care of you, and even have a little fun too!
